We are a new community of concerned citizens and businesses that wants not only to boost our economy but bring about a shift in our attitude towards money.
Crane Mountain from Warrensburgh
Warrensburgh calls itself the “Gateway to the Adirondacks” Coming off the Northway at Exit 23 we have a wonderful view of the first range of mountains which eventually lead to the high peaks. Magestically towering above the others in the northwest is Crane Mountain. It is not only a hikers and hunters dream but at its foot lie a wonderful area rich in sugar maple trees and little farms that produce world class cheese as well as most of the products we need to eat. We have chosen this little town of 4,000 full time residents to be the center of an experiment in sustainability. Over the past few years a community garden, farmer’s market, agricultural CSA, trail networks, volunteer projects, museum, hardy and creative businesses have developed and made this town an increasingly attractive place to live. Most recently there has been an initiative in developing Warrensburg into a “Transition Town” (see http://www.tricountynytransition.weebly.com), the creation of a Warrensburg Economic Development Committee and our own complementary currency project which not only promotes all things local but also increases the purchasing power of individuals and thereby also the income of businesses. However this needs a shift in thinking about money – the willingness of a community to come together in an exciting new project – to take back the money power into our own cooperative hands.
